A Tribute to Langka, Papaya, & Mango

Langka (jackfruit) is normally cooked as vegetable when unripe as in the ginataang langka of the Philippines, or the gudeg of Yogyakarta. It is typically eaten raw when ripe, though usually candied if used as dessert ingredient – halo-halo for instance. This is royalty in the kingdom of fruits.

Similarly, a papaya fruit when unripe is usually cooked as vegetable in tinolang manok for example and eaten raw when reddish or golden ripe. The green unripe papayas are also grated and made into delectable salad like the one I had in Thailand, or it can be pickled, as in atchara. Give me papaya over apple or oranges anytime.

And here is one reason why I won’t leave the Philippines – mango. I have tried mangoes in other countries but not one of them can beat the taste of Philippine mangoes. The moment I tasted its sweet ripe meat, all political ugliness of the country became tolerable.

This is the normal way to serve ripe mango though it is more fun to just peel off the soft skin and bite…juices dripping

Edible Winter Ornamental Plant

I have noted the presence of potted kale in various places in Japan this winter. From what I gather this vegetable is frost resistant and that is why it is pretty common at winter time though not for eating but for the beautification of their doorsteps.

Gulay Bundles

Gulay bundles at the talipapa or palengke are tied together nowadays by rubber band. Because of that, I’ve accumulated plenty of elastics from regular gulay buying. Bundles of gulay are often priced in multiples of five starting from five pesos and most belong in this cheapest set. Examples of gulay in five peso bundle are okra, sitaw, alugbati, saluyot, kangkong, malunggay, and pechay.

Green Eggplant

Nine months ago, I got couple of eggplant seedlings from a palengke vendor in Tagaytay. Turns out to be green eggplant which is even better.

I’ve planted the seedling in one container only but so far it yielded 6 green eggplants already and still continues to flower.

Golasiman

Golasiman shows its beauty and generosity a few hours each day in its happiest time - when the sun is up . See the tiny bee? He too is happy

Everyday, the flowers will open when the sun is up. A signal for the tiny bees to feed and a pretty sign for me to leave for the office. A few hours  afterwards, the flowers will close while the plant continues to worship the sun throughout the day.

Very easy to propagate, just cut and plant. It will then root. See the tiny bees in the yellow ones?
