Hotel

In Sri Lanka, a ‘hotel’ is an eating place (restaurant) and not (always) a sleeping place.

that would be very confusing to me. haha. if i see that sign i would think it is a hotel which has rented out its ground floor to a restaurant and kept the upper floors for the guest rooms. in france hotel d’ville, is french for city hall and that was confusing enough for us english speakers. but in sri lanka, what make them make hotel mean restaurant? is it the local dialect ?

Perhaps recycling an English word for local use. I don’t know haha
