Marine Signs

image

Inside this structure that’s connected to the island by wooden footbridge, you’ll see educational signs on marine creatures that can be found in its water. This gives the one who reads it a more meaningful snorkeling or diving experience.

Solar Image Fascination

image

Sunrise and the boat

Man has been observing the phases of day through the sun since Paleolithic Era until now, the “Android Age”. So there I was very recently in a tiny island, very mindful of the colors of the day attributed to the sun. Well, it’s our human nature that makes us store in some a place the solar image we’ve seen though not in cave paintings this time.

Bus Window Peddlers

image

At the rest stops for bus journeys in Cebu province, peddlers will hawk refreshments, mostly local delicacies and travel food staples such as boiled eggs, boiled peanuts, or boiled corn in the bus open windows — that is if you’re on a window seat in a non-aircon bus. The advantages of riding non-aircon bus apart from paying less are the natural breeze, bukid scents, unobstructed view for sightseeing or capturing photos, and convenient window buying of snacks.

Haiyan Aid Remnants

image

Last August, throughout the island of Malapascua in Northern Cebu, I’ve seen plenty of Red Cross tarpaulins repurposed as house roof extension for the rebuilt homes or as boatyard shade. I even came across a Shelter Box – still standing.

image

Shelter Box (Rotary)

So to those who have donated for the Shelter Box or to Red Cross for Typhoon Yolanda, I’d say those have certainly arrived as aid to the people of Malapascua as manifested from these remnants.

From Island To Mainland

The uncomplicated manner of commuting from the island of Malapascua to mainland Cebu province.

image

At Logon beach, procure a green paper ticket from the one-man ticketing office comprising of a small table that also serves as police detachment (says the sign) and a blackboard where the name of the boats and their corresponding schedules are written.

image

Ticketing office

The green ticket says Malapascua Port. Where’s the port? The Guanna boat, a yellow banca anchored far from the beach, will leave at 8:30 according to the blackboard. How to get there? Ride a small paddle flat boat for 20 pesos per passenger. Simple. Uncomplicated.

There is no drinking water source in Malapascua but there are several wells scattered in the island for household use.

image

At the left side of the well are three funnels for each pipeline of three separate houses

One can notice these makeshift pipelines with funnels beside each well as a way to bring manually fetched water using a bucket and rope system to the nearby houses.

Walis Tingting

image

Mundane life in the island

This old lady repetitively scrape each leaflet from its rib that came from a fallen dead coconut frond, then she’d set aside each stick on the ground for her to bind all of those together to form walis tingting.

Buriring Season

image

The defense mechanism of buriring is to inflate but the container is too small for everyone to puff up

When I was in Malapascua Island at the end of July until early days of August, I came upon residents gathering buriring (pufferfish) just near the shore of the beach. This small edible species is being fished for local consumption.

A Table of Binignit Ingredients

image

A table of binignit ingredients seen in Carbon Market, Cebu City. They are even retailing the vanilla flavoring (near a bunch of plantain)

Binignit is the Cebuano variation of ginataang halohalo. A sweet mixture of root crops such as sweet potato and yam, also plantain, sago, landang, jackfruit and rice balls stewed in coconut milk.
