Hotel

In Sri Lanka, a ‘hotel’ is an eating place (restaurant) and not (always) a sleeping place.

Scrap Paper as Bread Bag

image

Scrap paper as bread bag. At least it's not newspaper.

I got myself some delicious bread at a cheap bakery near the ticket window of Colombo Fort Station. It was for my breakfast while on the train bound for Kandy. The shop put my bread inside a paper bag made from annual accounting report scrap paper. At least it was not a newspaper.

The second time I came across of this kind of repurposed bread bag from a local bakery, it was still the same white scrap paper with no visible dirt. And still the bread was delicious.

Banyan Tree

image

Banyan trees are truly a remarkable sight in the urban spaces of Sri Lanka. I decided to collect some photos of this tree using my camera phone when I realized how prevalent its presence in Sri Lanka’s urban landscape.

Betel Quid Peddler

image

When you hear sounds from a tambourine of crown caps, then most likely it’s the betel quid ambulant vendor with his sling of slatted wooden box containing neatly arranged betel quid in between slats. Most noticeably are the betel quid cones of colored grated coconut that are grouped together in alternating colors. I have seen more than a few betel quid vendors walking around in Colombo.

About the betel quid, though it is prettily presented and happily chewed, its habitual indulgence will have adverse oral health impact according to this informative article from a medical journal.

Bus Paper Tickets in Sri Lanka

image

Tickets for 2 adults and 1 child

I thought at first it was a notebook the bus conductor was holding to jot down bus related affairs, instead it was a packet of tickets. He would write the amount using a ballpen, then he would tear one or more tickets corresponding to the number of passengers you paid for. A child rate will be given in an intercity bus (observation based from my tickets) which is approximately half of the regular rate.

Railway Pica-Pica Carrier

image

Finger snacks in cellophane packs are tied to a thick wire that is formed like a bag handle for easy carrying on a packed and moving train. Now from a passenger’s perspective, it is easy to see different sort of pica-pica available for sale.
