Must be a Filipino thing to replace “the” with d’

Barangay

Forthcoming is the barangay election thus campaign posters have sprouted in the villages all over the country. A government unit that operates at the people level is the barangay so this must be (should be) the most important government unit. I like the thought that this political unit exists prior to the arrival of Spaniards, hence it’s a Malay heritage with no bad memories as compared to those gobernadorcillo-headed pueblos and much bigger political units headed by alcade mayor and so on.

When it comes to campaign paraphernalia, I like those crude ones such as that repurposed rice sack poster with Pentel pen written "BILLYCARO"

Ibos, Bot-ong, Suman

Glutinous rice being the main ingredient of these kakanin trio of Bacolod: ibos, bot-ong, suman.

What one should expect when we say suman in Bacolod (known as biko in Cebu and Manila)

Takatak

That wooden rectangular box with compartments for cigarettes and candies and is usually strapped to the vendor for ambulant peddling is known as takatak.

This takatak man sells crackers too

Public market expansion over time which eventually overtook the road side but left this kilometer marker intact. This location is one kilometer from the capitol of Negros Occidental

Bibingka Oven

A perfect bibingka is superior to any perfect pancakes out there. Whatever fruit, sauce or filling one can add to a pancake, the same can be done to a bibingka but resulting into a far more superior hot cake in taste minus the horrendous price.

Live charcoals in that square tin pan covering the clay pan where you put the bibingka batter in banana leaf and this is placed on top of clay stove also fueled with live charcoals. Presenting the rice cake oven

The avocado leaf-pandan leaf tea inside that kettle on the left side is given for free as an accompaniment to the rice cake

Bibingka still in a pan. I'm happy that this unpretentious stall exist

Roadside Tinapa

Assortment of smoked fish (tinapa) such as tamban, bangus etc. The weaved bamboo is where they put the fish during smoking process

Exposed tinapa by the street. Seems smoking continues by means of vehicle exhaust

Cleaning Substances

In Bulacan towns you’ll notice several shops selling unbranded soap, detergent, fabric conditioner, and dishwashing liquid. I assumed these were all surplus from soap plants in that province but the lady from one shop said these are products by TESDA students. I also saw repacked branded ones like Ariel detergent powder. These came from damaged packaging according to the same lady.

Those unbranded ones were repacked by shops as they buy in bulk

Typography: Market Stalls

Hand painted store signs with related painted drawings in these humble stalls in Bocaue public market. I like those painted ones than the added Knorr sponsored signage above it.

Painted vegetable drawings. Folk signs such as this are honestly beautiful.

Roadside Bananas

I like stalls that sell fruits/vegetables from vendors’ own plots. It is the same banana so I buy from them whenever I have the chance helping them also to be sustainable. Truly it is more interesting to buy from these roadside stalls and directly from these small time sellers than in airconditioned supermarkets.

Ginebra

What comes into my Filipino mind of the name Ginebra is not the same Ginebra I ran into in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.  This time the name is associated with refinement and beauty.

Aside from the name, the fact that this portrait of Ginebra de Benci/Ginevra de’ Benci was created by Leonardo da Vinci of which his Mona Lisa portrait is more known have made this painting stand out in my memory of that visit.

By her expression, looks like there is more to this lady than what we physically see
