Betel Quid Peddler

When you hear sounds from a tambourine of crown caps, then most likely it’s the betel quid ambulant vendor with his sling of slatted wooden box containing neatly arranged betel quid in between slats. Most noticeably are the betel quid cones of colored grated coconut that are grouped together in alternating colors. I have seen more than a few betel quid vendors walking around in Colombo.

About the betel quid, though it is prettily presented and happily chewed, its habitual indulgence will have adverse oral health impact according to this informative article from a medical journal.

Bus Paper Tickets in Sri Lanka

Tickets for 2 adults and 1 child

I thought at first it was a notebook the bus conductor was holding to jot down bus related affairs, instead it was a packet of tickets. He would write the amount using a ballpen, then he would tear one or more tickets corresponding to the number of passengers you paid for. A child rate will be given in an intercity bus (observation based from my tickets) which is approximately half of the regular rate.

This guy wears a parasol hat on his head and long sleeves shirt, has a Monobloc chair and Styrofoam chest on his bamboo raft, and equiped with three fishing rods. I guess this is an example of a well prepared fisherman on a whole day fishing mission at Lake Lumot.
