Japan’s Tiny Toilet Bins

image

Because Japan’s toilet system has powerful flush mechanism and can break down tissue papers, therefore used tissues must be flushed, and that’s the reason why their trash bins are cute. Love this hygienic system.

image

In the Philippines, one needs to throw used tissue papers in the toilet trash bins because flushing it (lots of it) can cause clogging, hence the need for regular size trash bins. I really feel bad for those Japanese visitors in the country, especially the ladies who unintentionally found themselves in a situation where they’ve clogged the toilet bowl because of the mental model to flush the paper, then have realized too late the weak power of Philippine toilet flush.

Police Tiny Box

I asked my host regarding the purpose of those small tin boxes that says “polis.” From what I gathered from her, the policemen doing rounds make use of those boxes as receptacle for their logs.

Red post boxes in Bangkok are in pentagon shape or shaped like a house. The left slot says “BANGKOK” while on the right “OTHER PLACES”. Very straightforward.

Humble

Aimless walking in Melaka brought about snapshots of some notable incense holders of the Straits Chinese, like those tiny humble ones outside their shops, or the growing ones outside their temple.

Boxing Day Everyday

image

At the checkout counter, bagging of groceries can be three ways: In one’s brought bag, in supermarket provided paper bag, or in supermarket provided used carton. It’s been this way ever since plastic bags were banned in Makati City.

Chicken Coop Basket

In Ifugao villages, one can notice this dome shaped basket with wooden floor and wooden door used for transporting and caging chickens.

Every morning, they would let the chickens go to freely roam, then gather them once more in the cage before dusk.

Arinola Cashbox

Red arinola hanging in this fruit stall at downtown Iloilo

For the palengke or roadside vendors it seems that the portable potty (arinola) is the most efficient receptacle for cash. I’ve seen this type of cashbox-arinola phenomenon all over the country.

Newspaper as Food Wrap

The bamboo container used during smoking process holds the smoked tamban for roadside selling. Each container is wrapped in newspaper as a sanitation idea while being displayed using stacking system on the bamboo shelf just by the national highway.

When you buy the smoked tamban, these will also be wrapped in newspaper.

Kerupuk Tin Can

A see-through tin receptacle for large kerupuk (starch/flour/rice crackers) that are oftentimes eaten as side dish to a rice meal, as in one would chomp on the crackers, then partake on rice with viand using hands, then chomp on the crackers again and so on in that manner.  I’ve easily acquired the taste and habit of having kerupuk in my meals and have simply adapted to this kind of eating while I was in Indonesia.

Peddling Palm Sap

image

Smells like tuba says my fellow Filipino companion. So from the smell of it, those cylindrical receptacles contained palm sap sold as beverage by this cycling vendor. I tried to ask what they call it, but the Khmer guy not understanding what I said in English just smiled at me, so I smiled back and took picture of his bemused evening countenance.

Siem Reap River

I went over to their side, and the little boy was helping his father transfer the catch onto the basket. He was also showing me the small white fish from afar,so I signaled him to come closer to show me his basket.
